Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Wow! How did I get so old?”
Aging has been a weird process for me. On one hand, since my mother died at 47, I continually remind myself that it is a blessing that I turned 50 and am experiencing everything that goes along with that. On the other hand, getting old isn’t fun. My brain still thinks I’m a 20-30 something, but my body continually reminds me that I am not.
Do you get me?
My mother died of breast cancer when I was 24 so for the last 26 years I have been on a mission to prevent any form of cancer from entering my body. Until a few years ago, it never occurred to me that the beauty products I was putting on my face and skin contained ingredients that could be toxic to my body.
Seriously. So many companies produce products to help “slow down” the aging process, but at what cost? Have you ever thought about what may be in them?
The average woman applies 300 chemicals to her body each day from using shampoos, soaps, moisturizers, makeup, etc. Those chemicals have been shown to reach the blood stream in an average of 26 seconds. That is 26 seconds for a toxic ingredient to enter your body.
Not too long ago, I purchased a product from an unnamed expensive cosmetic company that was supposed to temporarily remove wrinkles from my skin wherever I applied it. It worked beautifully, but think about that for a minute. I was applying a product that worked like a glue and stretched and pulled my skin to remove wrinkles to help me look younger. What was I thinking? The chemicals in that product may have been helping me look younger, but they were injecting toxins into my skin. It took me about a week to come to the conclusion that using that skin tightening product was not a safe product to use.
I had purchased that product and a few others because I had started noticing that my face was starting wrinkle and feel more and more dry. It was almost as if I couldn’t keep enough moisturizer on my face. It was just dry! And, the years I spent laying out in the sun “tanning” my body with nothing but Crisco oil were starting to take a toll on my skin too. Raise your hand if you also used Crisco as a “tanning” oil.
For the record, I do not tan. I fry. I spent most of teenage years looking like a lobster. Now my poor skin is paying for it.
Sun exposure aside, there is also another big factor in our ever changing skin as we age:
Hormone imbalance is a big cause of dry skin and loss of skin elasticity. It was about the same time that I was going through menopause that I started noticing a huge change in the dryness of my skin. I couldn’t keep enough moisturizer on my face, hands and legs. They were soaking up lotion like it was nothing.
Your thyroid helps regulate moisture levels in the skin. When your thyroid is lacking in production, you can experience dry, scaly, itchy skin. On the other hand, an over active thyroid can lead to bloated and puffy skin. Neither option is appealing.
Estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that control the body’s production of collagen. Collagen is what gives you a youthful looking skin and why many women pay big $$ for collagen treatments. They want to get rid of those wrinkles! Getting rid of wrinkles is why I opted for that unnamed product mentioned above.
Keeping hormones, like estrogen, balanced is imperative because estrogen affects the body’s ability to maintain moisture.
There are several safe, natural alternatives to help maintain moisture in your skin and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles:
- Eat a diet high in fatty acids such as Omega 3 (salmon, walnuts, eggs, supplements) to help produce moisture in the skin.
- Stop with those steamy hot showers/baths. This is my downfall for sure. I LOVE hot showers and soaking in a hot bath, but hot water is notorious for drying out the skin. Challenge yourself to reduce the heat and take a “warm” shower instead.
- Use gentle soaps free of harsh chemicals.
- Use a moisturizer!
- Use sun protection! This may sound obvious, but we really don’t think about protecting our skin from the sun for normal every day activities. It only comes to mind when we are actually going to be playing in the sun.
Are you wondering where you can find products safe for your skin that can help balance those hormones? I’m telling you essential oils and essential oil products are the way to go! I was once a skeptic until I purchased them on a whim for something else having nothing to do with my hormones. But, using essential oils has been life changing for me and so many people I know. There are so many amazing health benefits to be gained by using essential oils!
You can read about using essential oil products to balance hormones and eliminate hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, etc. in my prior blog post here.
As for taking care of your ever-changing and aging skin, here are a list of my favorite natural, plant based products, all of which are formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petrochemicals, animal-derived ingredients, synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic dyes/colorants. Meaning, they are super safe for your skin and you won’t have to worry about any scary side effects from using them:
- Mirah Luminous Cleansing Oil
Hands down the best combination cleanser and moisturizer!
This natural, plant based cleanser is great for all skin types, but works wonders on those of us with dry skin. It contains Rose, Sandalwood and Jasmine essential oils, as well as Jojoba and Aragon oils—all ingredients that our skin loves! Simply massage on your face to remove makeup and dirt and then rinse with warm water. Your face will feel clean and moisturized. No need to add an extra moisturizer unless you want to.
Don’t just take my word for it:
I have normal to dry skin and Mirah Luminous Cleansing Oil is a game changer! The formula is strong enough to take off the day, but gentle enough to not strip away the natural oils. My face feels clean and refreshed. This oil cleanser doesn’t clog pores and leaves my skin soft and radiant the next morning. A must-have!

- Art Intensive Moisturizer
My favorite cream moisturizer! It provides long-lasting hydration to your skin and is formulated to recapture the qualities of young looking skin. It’s the only moisturizer I have found that doesn’t leave my face feeling like it needs to have more moisturizer added to it after an hour or so. It leaves my face feeling moisturized the whole day!
This 100% natural plant based product contains Hinoki, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, Frankincense, Cedarwood and Ylang Ylang essential oils. It is designed to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce visible signs of aging, promote skin hydration, leaving your skin feeling softer and more pliable.
- Charcoal Bar Soap
I’m in love with this bar soap! When I’m not using the Mirah Luminous Cleansing Oil, this is my go-to for cleaning my face. Sometimes I use the charcoal bar soap first and follow it up with the Mirah Luminous Cleansing Oil. Double whammy of goodness!
This bar soap is formulated with skin-purifying activated charcoal and pure essential oils. It leaves skin feeling soft and smooth. Like the other two products above, it is made without sulfates, phthalates, parabens, dyes, synthetic fragrances, or preservatives.
In addition to the three products mentioned above, there are several essential oils that are so good for your skin and you can easily add a few drops to of any of them to your regular moisturizer. Here are my list of favorites:
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Frankincense Essential Oil
- Lemon Essential Oil (photosensitive so be careful of immediate sun exposure after use)
